About
Making political science a little less distant.
Dr. Ted Brown teaches courses in American politics, state and local government, political theory, comparative politics, and international relations. Over the years, he has taught at universities and community colleges across Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas, and in just about every format imaginable, from traditional classrooms to fully online courses.
His research interests are a little broad, but they tend to come back to many of the same questions. What does citizenship actually ask of us? How do people understand power, responsibility, and their place in public life? And why do political institutions so often work differently than we expect them to?
In the classroom, he tries to make political science feel a little less distant and, ideally, a little less intimidating. Names, dates, institutions, and terminology matter, but they really just serve as the building blocks for understanding something larger. His hope is that students leave his courses thinking a little more carefully about the world around them, and perhaps more willing to embrace their place within it.

- Designed experiential assignments sending students to local government meetings, raising their sense of civic efficacy 23%.
- Developed six new courses to Quality Matters standards, averaging 4.7 / 5.0 on instruction evaluations.

Research
Political theory, argued through the stories people actually read.
He is also interested in the ways books, films, and popular culture can help us work through political ideas. His co-authored work has examined politics through Ender's Game and Starship Troopers, among other things. It turns out that science fiction has quite a bit to say about democracy, citizenship, war, and the uncomfortable choices people make.
